The Cost of Hot Water

The average household spends approximately one third of their heating dollars on water heating. How can you save energy and money? Start by turning down the thermostat on your water heater.

•  Somewhere between 120° F and 140°F  will work for most users. 
• Take shorter showers.
• Use cold water when possible to wash laundry.
• Insulate at least the first five feet of line from the hot water heater. Pipe insulation can be found at your local hardware store.
• Install low flow shower heads. Yes, the new designs are better.
• Consider an insulating blanket if your water heater is older and warm to touch.
• Install a solar domestic hot water system.
• Install a more efficient hot water system. Consult with your local heating and plumbing specialist on the options available.
